Salvage yard find(s)!! Gotta love this!
Ya'll aren't gonna believe what I found last week!!! I was hunting the salvage yard looking for some parts for my husband's truck that recently had a minor disagreement with a deer when I couldn't believe my eyes!!!! Sitting there, pretty as you please, were two good looking RX7's. Of course I had to take a closer look...from what I can tell they are a 79 and and 80. Both have factory sunroofs, air conditioning, and automatic hatch releases. The 80 appears to have a custom piece on the back the says Mazda RX7 (red with black lettering)...could be factory...I don't know. The 79 has some surface rust, but the 80 looks like it was painted not too long ago...I have to wonder why these beauties are there at all. The owner of the yard said they have been there a while, but they don't look like it. The 79 has fresh oil and new hoses...Don't know if they run. I'll find out when they deliver them later this week. (Any advice on what to do before I drop in a battery and just crank them would be appreciated). My Dad wants to use parts from the 80 to fix the 79 and then we will work on the 80. (It needs a few more parts than the 79). I'm really curious on what the story is on the cars. They came in without the rims and tires (luckily I have 2 extra sets from my 82 and 83!) One has an emmisions tag from California. I'm thinking maybe someone had them to put together and trashed the project. It's hard to find someone around here to work on the rotaries, but luckily my Dad and I have been tinkering with them for years...Hee Hee...I'm so excited!!!! I'll post pictures once we get them home.

Okay I have pictures of my find. It happens to be a normal saturday at pick and pull and the guy behind me at checkout sees the rotor in my hand, yes 3 hours just to get one rotor, and askes if that is for a rotary. We talk for a bit and askes if I'm interested in an 82 GSL and I respond that I can't afford it. He says I can have it FREE if I get it towed from his place, sweet deal I think to myself.
Here are some pics. I will probably use the suspension to put in my '79. He also said the he had the motor running by pouring gas down the carb, bad fuel pump.
Stupid tire. It happened while being towed.

I sent several pictures to my email from my Dad's phone and only two showed up. I'll send some more today when I see him, but for now....
first one is the '79 and the second one is the back piece of the '80.

mazdaverx713b...the car is silver with a dark grey interior...black carpet and surprisingly clean inside. The motor has fresh oil and new hoses on it. I'm doing a search this morning on proper startup procedures so that we don't damage anything. (salvage yard owner claimed it had been there for a while) This one even has keys for it. The 80 does not, but it does have all the original manuals and such from a dealership in California.

So far we have checked the electrical system in the 79 and all systems seem to be functioning properly...checked the motor for carbon lock and yep...she's locked. Put a few squirts of MMO in each plug hole last night and I'm getting ready to go over to Dad's to see if we can free her up. I did not realize that spark plugs are so hard to find for that car...The parts houses around here can't even order them. They cross referenced some NGKs and sold them to us so I hope they work. (6.99 each...ouch!) We bought some cheap plugs, as well, to use during the start up stuff so we don't waste the good ones... I'll keep ya'll posted on the process. I may have to start a new thread in the tech section...ya think?
